Copenhagen. Where Innovation meets the tradition
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark but if you ask me, I would say it is a new modern design, fashion, and architecture capital of the world. It is like a showman who is seamlessly juggling mixing tradition with crazy modern ideas and never lets the public rest, never stops surprising the audience. Walking the narrow, almost fairytale-like streets of Copenhagen you can sense the commitment of the city to sustainability as well as creativity. Bright, colorful, vibrant, modern, dynamic but yet very sentimental when it comes to traditions- it is all about Copenhagen! So what’s so special and unique going on about the modern design, architecture, and art in Copenhagen? Let’s dive in and check together by showcasing the city’s unique blend of creativity, functionality, and aesthetic expression.
When it comes to Copenhagen and modern design, the way I would describe it is simplicity with elegance. Danish design companies such as Hay, Normann Copenhagen, and Muuto are world-known for their sleek and functional creations. They are showing the world the ordinary things by seeing them extraordinary and implement that in designs. From the first look, you just know: “Simplicity is a new Luxury”.
Another strong point of Copenhagen it’s contemporary architecture. The skyline is dotted with striking examples of contemporary architecture, radiating inspiration and showcasing cutting-edge design and sustainable principles.
One of my personal favorite examples is The Circle Bridge. Why walk in circles if there is a bridge? Right, a Circle bridge! But it’s not just regular circles. The design resembles a ship by the quay and takes us to the Danish shipping history. Nowadays, it is mesmerizing to see the circles gracefully separating in front of the ships that need to pass through! On the other hand, the circles refer to the circle formed by the inner city of Copenhagen. What an amazing example of the idea behind design, of an exciting fusion of history and innovation!
Another favorite of mine is The Tietgenkollegiet student residence, designed by award-winning Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects. Indeed an inspiring place! Made me think about my student years and the Student residential buildings we as students had. Saying it was a huge difference is practically to say nothing at all. But back on track… The residence is inspired by the traditional Tulou houses in Southeastern China, the local village communities. An architectural wonder with its circular form and vibrant color façade!
Copenhagen is a heaven for art-lovers because the art is literally everywhere. The public spaces and streets often serve as canvases for the diverse range of art installations and urban interventions. Art can definitely transform the city look and one of the best proves is Superklien Urban Park, designed by Danish BIG in collaboration with artists Superflex and Topotek1. Superklein celebrates the Copenhagen’s diversity through a mix of art installations, landscaping features, recreational facilities. All of that transforms a usual park into an inclusive urban oasis for everyone.
Talking about art everywhere, I think it’s needless to mention countless colorful murals and graffiti in Copenhagen. A district called Norrebro is particularly known for street art culture with numerous street art festivals showing the works of local and international artists.
The commitment of the city to public art and creative expression has transformed the city into a living gallery where everyday life has blended with art and became one united whole entity.
Art, architecture, and design in Copenhagen and Denmark in general is an endless topic which is better “seen once than heard about 100 times”. Feel that creativity running through the veins of the city, that drive on the backdrop of historic charm. So come, see, get inspired, get the courage to create and Copenhagen is certainly that place!
